Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent horror film directed by George A. Romero. The story follows seven people who are trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania, which is besieged by a large and growing group of unnamed “living dead” monsters. The group consists of Barbra (Judith O’Dea), her brother Johnny (Russell Streiner), and five other people who, like Barbra and Johnny, had been visiting their relatives’ graves. The group is forced to fight for survival against the undead, who grow in number as each night passes. The film is noted for its groundbreaking use of special effects, which helped set the standard for zombie films. It was also one of the first films to explore the concepts of zombies as “the living dead” and of the undead as the result of a zombie virus. The film has become a cult classic and is often cited as a major influence on the horror genre.
