Spartacus is a 1960 American epic historical drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick, written by Dalton Trumbo, and based on the novel of the same name by Howard Fast. The film stars Kirk Douglas in the title role, Laurence Olivier as Roman general and politician Marcus Licinius Crassus, Charles Laughton as Sempronius Gracchus, Peter Ustinov as slave trader Lentulus Batiatus, Jean Simmons as Spartacus' wife Varinia, and Tony Curtis as Antoninus. The film follows Spartacus, a Thracian slave who is bought by the owner of a gladiator school, Batiatus. He leads a revolt of slaves against their Roman masters. With the help of his allies, he defeats the Romans and goes on a search for his wife. The film culminates with Spartacus leading his army in a final battle against the Romans. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. It has also been hailed as a classic of its genre, and has been acknowledged as one of Kubrick's best works.

The Guns of Navarone is a 1961 British-American action-adventure film directed by J. Lee Thompson. The movie stars Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn and Stanley Baker. The film is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Scottish author Alistair MacLean. The story is set during World War II, when a team of British and Greek soldiers is assigned a dangerous mission to find and destroy a powerful Nazi weapon, the "Guns of Navarone". The mission is complicated by the presence of German forces on the island as well as the treacherous terrain and extreme weather conditions. After numerous perils, the team is able to succeed in their mission. The movie was a critical and commercial success, and it was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
