What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 comedy mockumentary directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The film follows four vampires who live together in an apartment in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand. They are Viago (Waititi), a 379-year-old dandy; Vladislav (Clement), an 862-year-old ladies man; Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), an 83-year-old punk; and Petyr (Ben Fransham), an 8000-year-old ancient. Together they navigate their busy lives, taking part in human activities such as housework, shopping, and clubbing while trying to keep their identity as vampires a secret. Throughout their lives the vampires must also contend with The Beast (Rhys Darby), a rival vampire, and other threats. The film showcases the comedic aspects of vampire life, as the four attempt to balance their supernatural lives with their human one.
