The movie begins with a young woman, Chrissie Watkins, who is swimming at night when she is attacked by the shark. As she dies, Brody is made aware that there is a shark lurking in the waters off the shore. He attempts to close the beaches, but is met with opposition from the mayor and townspeople, who are more concerned with the impact it will have on their tourist-based economy. Brody teams up with a scientist, Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and a grizzled shark hunter, Quint (Robert Shaw), to hunt down the shark.
