The Color Purple is a 1985 American coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It tells the story of the life of a struggling African-American woman, Celie, in the early 20th century, and her struggles against a harsh and oppressive life. Set in rural Georgia, Celie faces poverty, racism and sexism, and her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets two strong women who help her to find her voice and self-worth. The film stars Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, and Oprah Winfrey in her film debut. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, but did not win any. It has since become a classic, heralded for its portrayal of the strength and resilience of African-American women.
