The Lion King is a 1994 animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, the film features the voices of Matthew Broderick, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane and Rowan Atkinson. The film follows the story of Simba, a young lion cub who is heir apparent to the Pride Lands of Africa. After his father, King Mufasa, is killed by his uncle Scar, Simba is tricked into believing he is responsible for his father's death and flees into exile. He is then found and raised by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog duo, and eventually comes to terms with his past and reclaims his throne. The film was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release. It won two Academy Awards for its score and song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". The film also spawned a Broadway adaptation, two video games, and several direct-to-video sequels and spin-offs.

Alan Menken wrote the film's score and received an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. The film also won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song ("A Whole New World") and Best Original Score. Along the way, Mowgli meets a variety of characters including a hypnotic snake, a group of vultures, and a lazy orangutan. After a confrontation with Shere Khan, Mowgli is accepted into a human village, where he struggles to fit in despite the challenges he faces. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 1967. The film was also the last animated feature produced by Walt Disney to be released during his lifetime.
