The story begins with Malcolm Crowe, a distinguished child psychologist, being shot by a disturbed former patient. He survives the attack and is determined to help Cole Sear, a young boy who is suffering from the same spiritual affliction. As Crowe works with Cole, he discovers that the boy is able to see, hear and even feel the presence of the dead. He eventually comes to the realization that the only way to help Cole is to help the ghosts themselves. Throughout the film, Cole, with the help of Malcolm, confronts his fears and battles the ghosts. The film culminates in a shocking twist ending, in which it is revealed that Malcolm was, in fact, dead all along. The film is a classic example of Shyamalan's mastery of the twist ending and is remembered as one of his most successful works.
