Little Big Man is a 1970 American comedy-drama film directed by Arthur Penn and based on the novel Little Big Man by Thomas Berger. Jack's story is told in flashback, starting when he is a young child captured by the Cheyenne in 1867, and follows his life up until his death in 1971. The film follows Jack's adventures with his Cheyenne family, his adoptive grandpa, and his various experiences in the Wild West, including battles with Native Americans, a stint in the U.S. Cavalry, and experiences with the white settlers in the area. Through it all, Jack learns the importance of family, love, and loyalty. Ultimately, Jack must come to terms with his own mortality, and chooses to accept death on his own terms.

The story follows both the Japanese and American forces as they prepare for and then launch the attack. The film ends with a detailed recreation of the attack itself, depicting the surprise and devastation of the Americans. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one for Best Special Effects.
