The Damned United is a 2009 biographical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and adapted from David Peace's novel of the same name. The film stars Michael Sheen as the controversial English football manager Brian Clough, and chronicles his ill-fated 44-day tenure as the manager of Leeds United. It follows Clough's dramatic transformation of the club from perennial underachievers to semi-finalists in the European Cup, and his turbulent relationship with Leeds United's combative manager, Don Revie. The film also stars Colm Meaney as Leeds chairman Sam Longson, Jim Broadbent as Derby chairman Peter Taylor, and Timothy Spall as Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty. The Damned United explores Clough's intense rivalry with Revie, and his complicated relationship with Taylor, his former assistant. The film received widespread critical acclaim, and was nominated for several awards, including a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film.
