Airplane! is a 1980 American parody comedy film directed and written by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson. The plot follows Ted Striker, a former military pilot suffering from a fear of flying, as he is forced to land a passenger aircraft when the crew falls ill from food poisoning. Striker's attempts to land the plane are complicated by a large number of gags, visual and verbal puns, and slapstick comedy. Airplane! was an unexpected box office success, grossing over $83 million in North America against a budget of only $3.5 million, and in the years since its release it has come to be regarded as one of the greatest comedy films of all time. It was followed by the 1982 sequel, Airplane II: The Sequel.
