The film follows Gardner as he struggles to make a living for himself and his five-year-old son, Christopher (Jaden Smith). Despite Gardner's best efforts, he and his son are evicted from their San Francisco apartment, and are forced to live on the streets. Gardner eventually lands a highly competitive unpaid internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, and eventually rises to become a successful stockbroker. Through his hard work and determination, Gardner is able to provide a better life for himself and his son.

He embarks on a journey of redemption by changing the lives of seven strangers through his selfless acts of kindness. As he falls in love with an altruistic heart-transplant recipient, he must come to terms with his identity and confront the truth of his past. In the end, Ben is able to find peace and forgiveness by sacrificing himself to save the woman he loves.
